Its time to experiment

It’s Time To Experiment

It’s time to experiment. And I share these three ways to look at it:  Why now, why it is okay to fail, where to start.

Why Not Now

So the first one I have is to act, or do it now.

Why not now? We are in a pandemic, and it doesn’t matter if this disruption or change is happening now or we look at some other risk assessments of PESTEL.

The term PESTEL, political, economic, social, technology, environmental and legal:

P – for Political, anything political, government stability.
E – for Economic, growth, exchange rates, anything affecting the economy.
S – for Social, is the population or the growth rate or distribution.
T – for Technology, incentives, innovation.
E – for Environment, for climate change, weather change, anything related to the environment
L – for Legal, which is anti-trust laws, discrimination, anything that is bound by those legal activities.

And it doesn’t matter what’s happening within your organization, or outside of it, act now.

This old way is not working

Come up with a fresh way, so what better time to start than now?

It’s Okay To Fail… Sort Of

The second lesson, the thing to learn about this, is it’s okay to fail. Failing means trying.

By starting and doing, you’re going to find some answers.

And I like this approach because it also sparks ideas for other. I think it is always time to experiment.

Think about the Tesla battery. I had a few years ago mention that they thought about Tesla battery a not so smart idea. I said I like that approach, because he is moving forward with finding a battery that has a very, very long life, and maybe it will not be for the car. Maybe the car won’t make it. I don’t know, but he is pushing the limits on batteries that maybe another industry, or another application. So if he takes it and run with it, and still fails, there may never be the next product that’s born from that.

And so making sure it’s okay to fail because you are putting effort to experiment. It’s not okay to set out to purposely fail.

Look For Inspiration

Number three is looking for inspiration from other leaders, and experts are in a different industry from you.

Repurpose

Maybe you can learn from them and how they repurposed a product. Or leverage a model they’re doing that may work for you. Or developed a solution to a similar problem.

Upstream and Downstream

Another way is supply chains, or as I call them, upstream and downstream from you. Is there something in there that you can learn that you can easily absorb or easily get rid of that would be really helpful to your organization?

Do The Opposite

Another way is to do the opposite, if you do
– short-term look at it long-term.
– in person, look at it virtually.
– for one, looking at it for many.

Just do the opposite of whatever you’re doing.

Those are three quick ways to draw inspiration or do that experiment.

P.S. Always be experimenting, not just times of disruption or change.  Experimentation allows you to exercise that experiment, that innovation muscle.  Then you are prepared for disruption, change, or PESTEL.

Actions

  • Start, share what you want to do and ask people to join
  • To get more experimental, give permission to fail
  • Pick a leader in an industry different from yours and study what makes them successful
