I averaged 1 video a week on YouTube for the last six months

As of this recording, it’s the end of May, I have 28 videos. So that is a little more than half, 26 for the year.

I was really surprised when I looked at my YouTube stats.

In fact, I was really proud of myself because I thought that I wasn’t even close. You know how we’re difficult, we’re much harder on ourselves?

I actually did average one a week.

As I was looking at my posting schedule, it wasn’t quite one a week.  I see that I was batching more and so I would like to make them more consistent and more flat line as opposed to the bell curve.

Taking Action

I’m really happy because I have my information out and I’m reaching more people.

I took action and I didn’t even worry about editing or anything.

  • I just wanted to get the videos out.
  • I wanted to learn from the process.
  • I wanted to get the information out there.

Then I figured I would reassess after I have some videos.  I’ll figure out what I can do to make it better.

What Equipment I invested In At Home

The few things that I’ve done along the way to make it as easy as possible.  I have purchased the following items in my home office to make sure I have no excuse:

  • background or backdrop
  • light
  • tripod
  • microphone

This setup allows me to sit down, plop my phone into the tripod and start recording.  This has been helpful because it has removed the barrier to prepare.

What equipment I use when traveling

I also have purchased a travel light and a travel tripod. I use my phone headset for a microphone if needed. Now, I have no excuse when I need to go travel for work or personal reasons.  I cannot fall off the wagon or not have equipment available when I feel inspired. I’ve definitely taken measures to ensure that I have the equipment.

Training

I took a video course to ensure that I knew how to do some basic editing and some of the equipment that I would need.

I’ve not done as much editing because I just want to get it out. That leads me to some of the tweaks that I’m going to make for the next six months of videos.

What Workflow Worked For Me

  • I have figured out that it is better for me to do the videos first thing in the morning when I post my daily content.   I was in the zone and it was top of mind.  I have to be more diligent about following this schedule. Also, I found that Friday morning also worked if I was going to batch them.
  • Batching was much easier for me to do; to do three to five videos in a row and then schedule them out.
  • For content, I was able to use the information from my two rounds of 90-day daily posts on LinkedIn. Oftentimes, the way that I have created those formats for my LinkedIn post would be super easy for me to do a video. I would share what was the inspiration or provide a little different context about how I came up with the idea or add some of the information that a text post wouldn’t allow you to see.
  • Doing it before work or at lunchtime was my optimal time. For some reason, in the afternoon, even though I tend to work better, I wasn’t as energetic and the videos didn’t seem to be as good.

Being Kind To Yourself

Not beating myself up. Acknowledging what I have done. 28 videos are completed and that’s incredible. It is also 28 more than I had 6 months ago. I’m very proud of myself.  I love the content.

I would like to make the videos a little more polished with editing. I’ve got to figure out when I’m going to do that in the next six months.

If it’s something that I can tweak at my process to do, if I should just send it out to somebody. Not only do I want to have [inaudible 00:04:23] more polished, I just want an intro card so you can see what the topic is about on the front. Maybe on the lower third I just would like some my main points made, and at the end maybe a call to action.

What’s Left To Do – Optimize

Then, the last thing that I’d like to have tweaked is getting it more optimized.

Right now I’m just putting the title out there, I am getting it done. I am taking action.

Next, is to start making things better.

There are always three things that you want to do, you want to stop, start or improve. I’ve started, so I am working on improving. I will have to adjust my process to make these videos more optimized so I can start getting more eyeballs on them.

The more that the videos are out there, and the more that I’m visible online, then people will see them as well.

Again, I’m trying to be patient but that might be in the works here for the next six months.

Those are my lessons learned so far for posting weekly on YouTube for the first part of 2018.

  • I definitely found an accountability group and I mentioned this as an item in Episode Number 10.
  • I took action right away and I did not have to perfect it, which has not always been me.
  • I am a recovering perfectionist. I realize I haven’t completed the things in the past that I wanted to so take that action right away and then tweaking it later. This has been very, very beneficial for me.
  • Be nice to yourself and celebrate the wins. I’ve talked about this and I’ve written some posts in the past about this.  Celebrate the wins, don’t beat yourself up.
  • I am plus two videos at almost a half a year so I should be proud of that. I work, again, on the consistency and really refining my process.

Those are my lessons learned for six months posting YouTube videos.

Next Steps: What I Learned Posting on YouTube

What can you do to produce videos:

  • Begin creating videos on your phone, you don’t need any equipment. In fact, about 2-3 years ago, I didn’t have any of the equipment, only phone a small tripod, and did about 100 facebook live videos.
